About us

Southern Stars Projects represents international artists and facilitates access to artworks not previously shown in Britain.

We are an independent platform driven by knowledge sharing. Our vision is nurtured by a passion for artists' contribution to society.

Our business ethos is a fair-trade gallery model for times of uncertainty. Inspired by progressive business ideas, we provide international exposure and curatorial guidance to artists.

Upholding the idea of a healthy planet and thriving societies, we share values with artists and audiences to promote wellbeing, avoiding waste production and carbon emissions and implementing fairness and transparency.

Our core belief is that not adding to life's betterment is unsustainable and unethical in the current climate and human emergencies.

We are committed to balancing out cultural appropriation's colonial legacies by sharing the knowledge systems embedded in the artworks in the artists' terms. Southern Stars Projects is a respectful enabler of intercultural connections and pledges to not speak for others, supporting the unconditional self-articulation of people of colour and indigenous nations.

Who we are

Founder and director Gabriela Salgado has held several senior roles in public institutions. Before being the artistic director at Te Tuhi gallery in Aotearoa New Zealand (2017-2020), she was curator of public programmes at Tate Modern (2006-2011), collection curator at University of Essex (1999-2005) and twice a biennale curator.

Over the past twenty years, she nurtured professional relations with artists in the southern hemisphere that cast constellations of affinity across distant latitudes.

Under the southern skies, she travelled widely to research and work in Latin America and Africa. Most recently, she found the same stars of her native country Argentina in remote Oceania.

The experiences connected by those constellations inspired Southern Stars Projects.
