To Heal - Curar

To Heal - Curar is the first exhibition of the suite RESTORE, a project curated by Gabriela Salgado at HANGAR Centre for Artistic Research gallery, Rua Damasceno Monteiro, 12, Lisbon, Portugal. From 25th November 2022 to 28th February 2023

To Heal - Curar includes existing and commissioned works by five international artists: Gabriel Chaile (AR-PT); Dalila Dalléas Bouzar (AL-FR); Andrew Esiebo (NG); Carla Guagliardi (BR/DE) and Ayrson Heráclito (BR).

The exhibition was conceived as an imaginary offering to encourage well-being, and as an affirmation aiming to alleviate the numerous ills of our time through allegory, ritual and site-specific interventions. The exhibition spans photography, video and painting, a commissioned performance, site-specific sculptures, and a collective activation. Nuanced and hospitable, the works become triggers to mitigate the effects of historical and current forms of violence by enhancing humans' capacity to rebuild from the ashes.

Studio visit with Delia Cancela

Deliaxtalk-16.9.jpg

Delia Cancela and Southern Stars Projects director Gabriela Salgado invite you to visit the artist’s studio in Buenos Aires. In this one-of-a-kind occasion, Delia Cancela will tell us about her creative process while showing some of her renowned pieces in the magical setting of her studio. The conversation will explore her long-held focus on women’s deep bond with nature as well as unpacking her current interests.

Delia Cancela was born in Buenos Aires and currently lives between Buenos Aires and Paris. She was part of the Argentine avantgarde Instituto Di Tella (ITDT) in the 1960s, where she took part in the seminal Experiencias Visuales 67 and Experiencias 68 exhibitions and held the fashion show Ropa con Riesgo.

In 1967 she travelled to Paris, later moved to New York and settled in London in 1970 with her partner Pablo Mesejean, working as the collaborative duo Pablo and Delia. In London their work received immediate recognition and was published in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and other publications. In 1975 they moved to Paris where they presented their collections combining fashion and performance.

In 2018 the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires held the retrospective exhibition Reina de Corazones Queen of Hearts 1962-2018, and in 2020-2021 her work was part of Crear Mundos/ Making Worlds, an exhibition of international women artists at Proa Foundation, Buenos Aires.

Delia Cancela: We are Nature - Nature is Us

Delia Cancela, Path, 2020.Exhibition image.jpg

The works presented in this exhibition belong to the series Mujeres y Naturaleza / Women and Nature, and expand upon a long-held motif in Delia Cancela's practice.

When Delia began her art studies at the age of 13, she observed how historical paintings depicted women as splendid creatures. However, this quality was sharply in contrast to their lack of agency in real life. Icons of beauty and elegance, the painted women's sensuality and allure didn't sit comfortably in the artist's mind with their home confinement and their exclusion from education. In this sense, the apron, which Delia frequently employs as painting support to make wearable artworks, summons the contrived domestic space's tension exposing age-old gender-based labour hierarchies.

Hence, the first years of her artistic practice were centred on representing liberated women of the 1960s, elegant and daringly modern at once.

The online exhibition is presented within the ‘Female Voices from Latin America’ series and hosted at Vortic.art platform.
