Ayrson Heraclito
Ayrson Heráclito is a visual artist and curator. He teaches at UFRB The Federal University of Recôncavo da Bahia. He holds a PhD in Semiotics from PUC, The Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo and a MA in Visual Arts from The Federal University of Bahia, Brazil.
His installations, performances, photographs and audiovisual works focus on elements from Afro-Brazilian culture and their connections between Africa and its diaspora in the Americas.
He participated in the Luanda Triennale, Angola, 2010, Rencontres de la Photographie in Bamako, Mali, 2015 and the 57th Venice Biennale, 2017. His works are part of numerous institutional collections including Museum der Weltkulturen in Frankfurt, Germany, Museu de Arte do Rio, MAR, Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia, Videobrasil e Coleção Itaú in Brazil.
He was co-curator of the 3a Bienal da Bahia and curator of the nucleus ‘Routes and Transes: Africa, Jamaica and Bahia’ included in the project Afro-Atlantic Histories at the MASP. He was awarded a Sesc_Videobrasil residency at Raw Material in Dakar, Senegal in 2015. The Museu de Arte do Rio held the artist’ retrospective exhibition ‘Yorubaiano’ in 2021.
